For those who are new to surfing and those who are natural on a board, San Diego has a large community of surfing shops, beautiful beaches and warm, welcoming water! Ocean Park Inn is located only steps from the sand and we encourage all our guests to head outside and see all San Diego and the Pacific Ocean have to offer.
La Jolla Shores
Skill level: Beginner/Intermediate
If you’re a beginner and hoping to try surfing for the first time, look no further than La Jolla Shores! The beach offers year-round lifeguarding services, facilities open to the public and a large parking lot in addition to street parking.
Here’s a tip: When walking through the water in La Jolla, shuffle your feet! Stingrays can sometimes be found in the water and shuffling your way into the water will clear your path. If you happen to see one, give yourself a little distance and enjoy watching them in their natural habitat.
Del Mar
Skill level: Intermediate
The beauty of Del Mar beaches is no secret, but they continue to be a prime location for surfing of any skill level. With sand bottom beach breaks and wide open space from Torrey Pines State Beach all the way to the river mouth, any surfer can catch their own wave!
Pacific Beach
Skill level: Beginner/Intermediate
You don’t have to go far to find good surf! Take a stroll from your room right to the sand to find Pacific Beach and its warm water, unique breaks and friendly atmosphere. If you need to relax after a full day of being on the water, Pacific Beach’s downtown area also offers a wide variety of food and shopping at your fingertips. To learn more about PB, click here.
Black’s Beach
Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced
If you are hoping for more of a challenge, La Jolla’s Black’s Beach is one of the best gems of the area. Beneath the towering cliffs and hang glider port, the water covers the underwater Scripps Canyon. Watch out where you land your board, however; Black’s Beach is a famously nude beach!
