San Diego is excited to welcome the AARP this September, when the organization will host its 1st Annual “Ideas@50+” National Event and Expo. This three day volunteer tourism project will take place Thursday, September 4 to Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the San Diego Convention Center in downtown San Diego. On Thursday, September 4th thousands of AARP volunteers from all over the country will be transported to various neighborhoods in San Diego to engage in service projects where they will immerse themselves in local communities with the goal of impacting lives and leaving behind a lasting legacy. Each community will receive a variety of help in order to support the growth of families and their communities.
This “Voluntourism Project” will include projects that focus on home refurbishing and community landscaping, as well as green projects that will build community gardens to beautify our local neighborhoods. There will also be plans that focus on senior center revitalization and community clean up. If you are looking for a service project that takes place inside of the event’s hub at the Convention Center, there will be a 3-day meal packing activity that will put together care packages for hunger needs within San Diego County.
Throughout the event celebrities and keynote speakers will take the stage to inform, entertain and engage with the convention attendees. AARP will also sponsor informational sessions that include topics centered around Health & Wellness, Travel & Lifestyle, Technology & Innovation and Money & Work. These sessions will allow you to further engage with AARP thought leaders and innovative thinkers.
To conclude the weekend and thank all of the volunteers, AARP will sponsor a concert with three exciting musical acts. John Mellencamp will perform along with special guests Los Lobos and Mavis Staples.
The convention concludes on Saturday, giving attendees all of Sunday to explore San Diego’s wonderful beaches.
