It’s not officially summer in San Diego until opening day at Del Mar. With the season just around the corner (July 17 – Sept 4), we can’t wait to see the flood of patrons enter the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club dressed to the nines, boasting bright argyle prints and large, decorated hats. Not to mention Family Fun Day on July 21st, and the Del Mar Concert Series which round out the excitement of summer at Del Mar.
On July 21st, guests are encouraged to bring their whole families to take advantage of the numerous FREE attractions. Plus, racetrack admission is FREE for children 17 and under, while adults are only $6. Children 12 and under will also receive a FREE plush horse! Each horse has an attached secret code, which gives each child entrance into the Webkinz.com virtual world, where they can bring their horses to life with games and activities. This is an event that should not be missed by family’s visiting Southern California in the month of July.
Not only can a vacationer enjoy some of the finest equine racing on the planet at this great venue, but the racetrack also plays host to some of the best summer concerts on the West Coast. No one hesitates to buy tickets for these killer concerts, with crowds reaching 20,000 people in size. Artists for this year’s concert series include Weezer, Sammy Hagar & The Wabos, Iration, Ziggy Marley, The B-52s and some unknown “special guests!”
The concerts are free with track admission. If you arrive after the races and have not paid track admission, tickets to the concerts are $20. Seating is general admission and standing room only.
